I have had the pleasure to spend the day in the vineyards and winery with Massimiliano and the passionate team at Santa Margherita. Their attention to detail with all aspects of the winemaking industry is to be seen to be believed. From incredible foresight and investment in sustainable viticulture, underground irrigation, the use of biomass and solar energy production and use and even making their own 'light-weight' wine bottles

 

And then planting natives in their home country and overseas sets standards that others should strive for. For over 50 years Santa Margherita have been inspiring winemakers to express the bright personality of the pink-skinned Pinot Grigio grapes grown in the Trentino - Alto Adige region of northern Italy. Their first vintage was back in 1961, where what seems obvious today, they combined traditional winemaking with sparkling wine thinking. Meaning as the fruit comes into the winery - they immediately separate the skins from the must during pressing so as to prevent any hint of colour.
Thus creating a vibrant juice focused white wine: with a fresh and fragrant bouquet and a lively palate: and back then creating a revolution for the region and as a wine style. Santa Margherita’s Pinot Grigio has an incredible worldwide popularity, maintaining its position as the benchmark expression by which all other Pinot Grigio wines are judged.
The fruit for this wine is grown at relatively low altitudes for the region at between 150-300m above sea level in a mix of alluvial and stone soils. The ripe fruit was harvested in the first half of September. On arrival at the winery the fruit was quickly pressed so as mention above, the must does not remain in contact with the skins, from which it would otherwise take on the bronze colour. Then the must was fermented for around 10-15 days at 18°C. Once completed to dry, the wine was then stored at a controlled temperature of 15-16°C in stainless steel tanks until it is time for filtering and bottling.
As your pour this wine into your glass, you will be greeted by a pale straw yellow colour and a shimmering hue. The wine has a crisp, bright aroma of golden delicious apples and firm green pear. The palate is bone-dry, but with an appealing flourish of those aromas which delicately turn into lively flavours kissing your tongue, with the wines natural lifted acidity and subtle mineral seam resulting in a wine with personality, versatility and a clean crisp finish.
This 2015 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio D.O.C. has 12.5% Alc. Chill gently and serve in an aromatic wine glass at 8-10°C.
