Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Yarra Valley, Australia
Chief Winemaker: Steve Webber

Steve has an incredible understanding of the key elements in winemaking. He knows intuitively what his vineyards can produce, how each different varietal will respond, and how to express the best of both in a wine which will connect on some many occasions. Chardonnay adapts better than most varietals to its surrounds. But crafting a Chardonnay of this quality is not easy, and this wine has vibrantly generous aromas and flavours.

Along with a real charm, true sense of place and an elegance, - and yes, the bottle was empty before we know it. This De Bortoli ‘Estate Grown’ wine was sourced from the ‘winery vineyard’ located at Dixons Creek in the northern area of the Yarra Valley. This 200 ha vineyard is nestled into the western slopes facing predominantly east. The vineyard tapestry was carefully planted to match varietal with wine style. Drive block was planted in 1975, Melba block planted in 1991, Amphi and Pistol blocks were planted in 1994. These 4 vineyards consistently produce the finest, most detailed wines from the 13 different Chardonnay plots on the estate.
The warm 2014 growing season was a low cropping vintage, with the harvested fruit expressing a balanced flavours, texture and refreshing acidity. As the selected hand-picked parcels of fruit arrived at the winery, they were vinified and matured separately.
The grapes were gently pressed off and allowed to settle overnight. The following morning the juice was then racked into older French oak barriques, which varied from 225L, 500L and 5700L in size. Where the juice underwent fermentation and maturation for around 9 months. The oak barriques when deemed ready were racked to stainless steel tank and after a gently fining, bottled in late December.
These mature vines, received only minimal handling, and thoughtful winemaking. Resulting in an elegant, hand-crafted wine which reflects the unique rich characters of the De Bortoli 'Yarra Valley' Estate.
As you pour this Chardonnay into your glass - you will be greeted by a pale straw gold colour with a green hue. This wine has an inviting bouquet, expressing peach and pear notes, hints of grapefruit along with subtle hazelnut and oak aromas.
The palate is elegant and well balanced showcasing vibrant summer white flesh fruits, an integrated mineral seam, and a silky texture. The peach flavours are complemented by green melon and slightly toasted oatmeal characters which linger on the edges of a clean, dry palate and finishes with length. An elegant and delicious expression.
This 2014 De Bortoli ‘Yarra Valley’ Estate Grown Chardonnay has 13% Alc. Chill gently and served in a generously shaped wine glass at 8-10°C.

An elegant Yarra Valley Chardonnay, with a true sense of place.
