The name ‘zephyr’ characterises the prevailing local winds which complement Marlborough’s unique ripening conditions, producing lively aromatic fruit off their family owned vineyards. Their vineyards along with Ben are renowned as aromatic specialists, but this Chardonnay shows he has more stings to his bow, producing an engaging wine with real typicity.
This single vineyard Chardonnay is crafted from French clone 95. The carefully hand-picked whole bunches were pressed off to oak barrel, where the juice underwent a wild fermentation. The wine has combined well with the thoughtful use and time in oak, balanced by very little malolactic fermentation, with the intention to retain natural vibrancy and express the unique texture from the Dillon's Point vines.
As you pour this Chardonnay into your glass you will be greeted by a pale straw-gold colour, with a subtle lime hue. On the nose, you will find citrus, grapefruit, green apple notes along with a subtle touch of spice from time in oak. On the palate, you have a medium weight wine, showcasing cooler climate characters of pip fruits, with good natural acidity and entwined savoury oak spice giving the wine good structure and a fine texture - all combining to produce a pleasingly lingering, clean dry finish.
This 2015 zephyr ‘Marlborough’ Chardonnay has 13% Alc. Chill gently and served in a medium sized wine glass at around 8-9°C.
An early drinking, oaked Marlborough Chardonnay with character.
Drinking perfectly well this coming season; and will age nicely for another 2-3 years.
