Grape Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
Growing Region: Marlborough, New Zealand
Owner / Winemaker: Jules Taylor

OTQ - short for 'On The Quiet' is a project, where Jules has been trying something a little bit different. With Jules incredible understanding of this varietal, she has been challenging and pushing techniques to stretch the conventional interpretation of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. While crafting a wine which expresses the unique character of a very special vineyard. The effort and resulting wine is something I recommend you share.

The bespoke bottle has a beautiful full-wrap screen print illustration, which takes its inspiration from the flora and fauna found in their Marlborough vineyards. The ‘OTQ’ series is a very personal expression, showcasing more than the winemaking skills of Jules. But a vision to create a wine which cuts through the noise and truly expresses its sense of place.
The fruit comes off the Plunkett Vineyard which is located at Dillons Point, in the lower Wairau Valley. Another testing growing season, determined that the vines be cropped with low yields, producing grapes of exceptional quality and impressive concentration of flavour, physiological ripeness and ideal sugar-acid balance.
Jules identified this parcel of fruit early in the growing season, knowing that it can produce something very special. Then came the careful hand-harvesting, with only the best bunches across the vineyard selected. On arrival into the winery, they were immediately pressed into old French oak barriques where a meticulous fermentation with wild yeasts took place. The wine also went through partial malolactic fermentation to balance the acid profile, while adding layers of palate complexity. The wine in oak barrels then rested on yeast lees during the winter, being gently stirred from the onset of spring through summer. The complex wine was blended and then stabilised prior to bottling and only released a short time ago.
As you pour this wine into your glass, you will be greeted by a wine with a pale lime-gold colour and a bright hue. On the nose the aromas leap from the glass showcasing tropical fruits, along with wild meadow flowers, fresh herbs and infused oak notes.
On the palate you have a captivating fusion of elderberry, white fleshed peach and honeysuckle, perfectly interwoven with dried herbs and spice notes from the oak. Revealing multiple layers of character, this bespoke Sauvignon Blanc offers a delicious combination of juicy white fleshed fruit flavours. All beautifully laced with notes of pistachio and pink-grape fruit acidity on a lingering and ever so pleasing bright finish.
This 2016 Jules Taylor ‘OTQ’ Sauvignon Blanc has 13.5% Alc. Chill gently and serve in a generous aromatic style wine glass at 8-10°C.

A Sauvignon Blanc born of an indulgence - and over delivering on all senses.
