Grape Variety: 100% Grüner Veltliner
Growing Region: Gisborne, New Zealand
Owners: Kirsten & Richard Searle

In July of last year - I spent some time in Austria, the home of Grüner Veltliner - visiting vineyards and looking at several different styles and interpretations of this varietal. As with most aromatic grape varietals planted here in New Zealand - our expressions highlight different notes. This Gisborne expression of Grüner Veltliner highlights how suited it is to the local climate and cuisine - while at the same time hinting at its varietal typicity and heritage.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from Paul Tietjen’s vineyard planted on what is locally called the ‘Golden Slope’ area of Gisborne. The vines are planted on deep alluvial soils over clay which helps Grüner Veltliner thrive. Due to the youthful age of the vines - they only laid down 2 canes per vine for the growing season. This resulted in yields of around 6 tonnes per hectare at harvest time - ensuring nice ripe flavours.
Once everyone was happy with the flavour profile across the vineyard - the fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning and transported to the winery. The grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters and the juice was then cold settled for 36 hours. The juice was then drained off into another steel tank - where it was inoculated and underwent cool fermentation until it was nicely balance. The wine was then stabilised, filtered and bottled.
In the glass you have a pale straw colour with a green hue. The wine has a delicate nose, showing hints of citrus, apple blossom, mandarin and red apples. The wine has a subtle palate, though revealing nicely woven layers of those citrus fruits, sweet apple and white peaches. There is also a soft seam of sweetness through the mid-palate giving a pleasant mouth feel and a refreshingly clean finish. Chill and serve at 8°C.

The palate is filled with vibrant summer fruit flavours.
