Grape Varietal: 100% Syrah
Growing Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Peter Robertson

It has been 3 long years, since we have had the opportunity to open and appreciate a bottle of the revered ‘Hillside’ Syrah. Peter bought Brookfields Vineyards back in 1977 - and after 20 years of exploring and talking with local farmers.
He finally found and planted a most special ‘Hillside’ site vineyard, located adjacent to ‘Bridge Pa’ (a small rural settlement) in Hawke’s Bay. The crafting of this small parcel ‘Hillside’ Syrah, is only considered during the best of growing seasons - the last being in 2010.

Then only after several barrel tastings and discussions is it agreed to blend and bottle this special wine. The 2013 vintage was a most memorable one for the whole New Zealand wine industry. Being described by those in the know, as arguably the best New Zealand has yet seen. So what better way to salute and remember a great vintage - than to craft and bottle a wine to capture this season.
The ripe parcels of Syrah fruit were harvested on the 11th and 16th of April. The intensely flavoured bunches were de-stemmed, crushed and then fermentation took place in open top fermenters at warm temperatures, to extract colour and tannins. Following pressing, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was then racked into barriques (predominantly new French oak barrels) for maturation and development. Then some 12 months later the wine was taken out of oak barrel, tasted, blended and was estate bottled.
As you fill your glass, you will be greeted by an intense red wine with a magenta glow. On the already expressive nose, this 2013 ‘Hillside’ Syrah has generous sweet dark berries, crushed spice, herb infused pepper and a hint of toasty oak. All of these ripe dark berry characters carry through onto the palate. Together with notes of tobacco, liquorice nicely wrapped up in firm tannins and integrated oak, all combined in what can only be described as an encore finish. This 2013 Brookfields Vineyards 'Hillside' Syrah has 14% Alc. If opened in the next 12-18 months decant for at least 60 minutes, then serve in a large shaped glass at 16-18°C.

An exceptional wine, from an exceptional vintage.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
With decanting, approachable this Xmas season, though would thank another 4-5 years. Plus it will repay those with patience, for another 10-12 years.

FOOD PAIRING SUGGESTIONS:
Perfect wine pairing with prime-cuts of aged red meat, or slow-roasted duck, seasoned with Dijon mustard and then coated with herb bread crumbs, served with new, baby roasted vegetables in a wine-jus, enjoy.
