Grüner Veltliner is really taking New Zealand taste buds by storm and this Tinpot Hut expression is a wine you really should share with good food and friends this summer. This particular Grüner Veltliner is the second vintage sourced from a single vineyard grown by the McKee family, in the Blind River sub-region of the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. Fiona named her range of wines after a local landmark, the historic Tinpot Hut or ‘mustering hut'.

 

The Tinpot Hut symbolises the history of agriculture in the region and reflects its evolution from a sheep farming heartland to one of the world’s most dynamic wine regions. As a winemaker Fiona focuses on producing wines which have varietal typicity and express the unique characteristics inherent of the terroir - and this wine expresses just that.
The 2013 growing season was something special, with the vines enjoying a long warm and dry summer resulting in vibrant flavours. Careful vineyard management during the season ensured that the grape bunches achieved an ideal balance, allowing for optimal ripening.
Once Fiona was happy with the grapes flavour profile, whole bunches were hand-picked to minimise skin phenolics in the finished wine. During the pressing of the grapes, early in the process a ‘press-cut’ or free run juice was drained off and fermented in stainless steel tank to retain fruit character and freshness.
On the palate this wine truly comes into its own, as Grüner Veltliner is a very textural wine with an appealing mouth feel. Flavours of pear, white peach entwine with pepper and dried spice notes. This wine has a confident seam of mineral complexity, which after two vintages is a specific character of the varietal and reflective of the Blind River sub region, and gives this wine a clean and crisp mouth-feel. This medium weight wine has good structure and balance of the ripe fruit, mineral notes and natural acidity, which combine well together and lead to a lingering off-dry clean finish. This wine has 12.65% Alc, chill and serve at 8-10°C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this summer season; and will develop further over the next 2-3 years.
