Grape Variety: Pinot Noir & Chardonnay blend
Growing Region: Epernay, France
Chef-de-Cave: Dominique Petit

The relationship between Champagne Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to a luncheon given by the British Ambassador to France after the liberation of Paris in 1944. At which was served the stunning 1928 vintage Pol Roger. Also attending was Odette Pol-Roger, with whom they had an instant rapport. A friendship of families which continued until Churchill’s death in 1965; and which is still as strong to this day.

Sadly Churchill never visited Pol Roger, but he proclaimed it “the most drinkable address in the world”. He even named one of his racehorses ‘Pol Roger’ and the filly strode to victory at Kempton Park in 1953, the Queen’s Coronation Year - where Pol Roger was also served.
This Prestige Cuvée is homage to Sir Winston Churchill; mindful of the qualities that he desired in his champagne: robust, full-bodied and with relative maturity. Th¬e exact blend is a closely guarded family secret - though Pinot Noir dominates, providing structure, breadth and a robust nature, while Chardonnay contributes elegance and finesse. Composed exclusively from ‘Grand Cru’ Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards which were under vine during Churchill’s lifetime. ‘Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill’ is only made in the very best vintages and always released later than the other vintage dated Pol Roger Champagnes.
The latest 2002 vintage is the 14th and was released after 11 years cellaring and produced in very small quantities. 2002 was a generally warm year with a particularly mild winter - the harvest commenced on the 12th September for the most forward parcels with the last bunches on the 28th September. The parcels of fruit had a remarkable level of ripeness - with an average 10.5% ABV after the first fermentation.
As you pour - you will be greeted with an intense golden-yellow glow and a lively stream of perlage. The nose reveals aromas of freshly squeezed citrus and some brioche development. As the wine breaths in a wide tulip shaped flute, complex aromas of lightly toasted brioche accompanied with spice and dried fruits reveal themselves.
These enticing aromas carry through onto the palate; which has power, a firm structure and is well-balanced with intense rich flavours of wild honeycomb, ginger and citrus notes which leaves a refreshing acidity. The finish has remarkable length. A dosage of 8g/L, 12% Alc and should be gently chilled, decanted for 10 minutes and served at 9-11°C

“My tastes are simple; I am easily satisfied with the best”. - Winston Churchill.
