If you are looking for a red wine to enjoy with good friends and freshly dishes with great flavours - then look no further than this Shiraz which definitely over delivers. The team at Kaesler who are led by the relaxed but ever so talented Reid work with just over 37 hectares of their own vineyards in the Barossa Valley, with a majority being old vines dating back to 1893, 1899, 1930 and the early 1960’s.

Though being honest with you the vineyard from which the fruit for this ‘Stonehorse’ Shiraz came from, was planted in 1985. The name 'Stonehorse' comes from the Clydesdale horses that used to work the heavy clay soils at Kaesler, long before tractors arrived on the scene. During the growing season the vines underwent crop thinning to control yields and maximize the berry flavours. All of this meticulous work in the vineyard is carried out by Nigel Van Der Zande the vineyard manager for Kaesler.
Each of the hand harvested blocks were kept separate until final blending. As the fruit arrived into the winery, each parcel was fermented with live yeast for a healthy ferment. The juice had skin contact for about 9 days with the cap being pumped over twice a day. After fermentation it was pressed off and let to rest for one day then placed into oak barrels. Following malolactic fermentation the wine was racked off its lees and returned to new and used barrels, where it developed for 15 months. Which has given the wine a nicely balanced oak note: while still allowing the fruit to express itself. The wine was bottled with only a light filtration.
This 2012 'Stonehorse' Shiraz is full of character - as you pour the wine into your glass you will be greeted by an inky rich red colour with a dark core and a crimson edge. On the nose you have vibrant dark fruits and wild forest berries along with hints of dried spice. The palate is currently youthful - though already showing supple and even elegant characteristics and friendly tannins in the mouth. The wine is full of blackberry and blueberry flavours, added with lighter red fruits such as cherries. Plus due to the ample time in oak the wines natural spicy notes and ripe fruits are well supported, giving the wine a lengthy finish.
This Shiraz has 14.5% Alc. Decant if possible for 30-45 minutes and serve at 16-18°C.

An approachable Barossa Shiraz that will impress.
