Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Waipara Valley, New Zealand
Chief Winemaker: Simon McGeorge

The fruit for this outstanding Chardonnay was handpicked solely from their ‘Home Block Vineyard’ situated in the heart of the Waipara Valley - and also home to their winery and cellar-door. The Home Block's particularly mix of gravelly soils and minerality enhance the rich and spicy characters of this fruit driven wine. The vineyards were first planted in 1994, and are currently grown on their own roots.

This Chardonnay showcases the vibrancy of this unique vineyard along with developing complexity achieved by controlled winemaking. The 2013 growing season was beautifully warm and calm producing fruit of perfect balance. The Waipara Valley had a stable autumn period, which allowed the team to harvest the fruit at just the right time to achieve full flavour, ripeness and natural fruit expressions.
As mentioned above the fruit was hand-picked and then on arrival into the winery was whole bunch pressed, with the juice going directly into oak barrels with a varying amount of solids. Due to the varied composition of each barrel, each was carefully monitored with fermentation taking over four weeks with a careful selection of wild and inoculated yeasts. Following this, the barrels were simply topped and left over the winter months. In spring the barrels were given a gently stirred weekly to develop palate texture, then after completing malolactic fermentation, barrels were selected for blending together in January before the finished wine was bottled in March 2014.
As you pour this Chardonnay into your glass - you will be greeted by a shimmering pale gold colour. On the nose you have a combination of citrus and stone fruits fighting for your attention, with subtle hazelnut notes. These characters carry through onto the palate which is forward and broad, with a soft buttery note. You have ripe white peaches and integrated citrus flavours all nicely supported by the seamless toasty notes of the oak from the barrel fermentation. This bone dry wine is perfectly weighted being made at a controlled 13.2% alcohol and the smooth palate combined with refreshing natural acidity gives this wine a lifted, bright finish. Chill and serve at 8-10°C.

A vibrantly complex barrel fermented Chardonnay.
