I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the early expressions crafted from this newly planted varietal in New Zealand. When tasting this wine, you could describe it as cool climate, showing characters of aromatic varietals and the palate of a Chardonnay. Similar to the early drinking wines of Pinot Gris and the rejuvenating interest in off-dry Riesling, this exciting varietal gives another option when pairing wine with seafood and Asian influenced cuisine.

 

The fruit produced during the stunning 2013 season has again impressed Jules with its diverse aromatics and complex flavour profile. The fruit for this wine was harvested both by machine and hand - from three small vineyards in Marlborough and Gisborne from late April into early May. All the family, friends and even their children helped to get in the hand-picked portion. The fruit on arrival into the winery was quickly, through lightly pressed and cold settled for just over 48 hours to remove any solids before fermentation took place with selected yeast strains. The juice underwent a long and cool fermentation to retain all those vibrant aromatics. After resting the wine was gently clarified, stabilised and bottled with a screw-cap closure to retain natural freshness.
In Jules own words - “The 2013 growing season was in a word - perfect”. Their vineyards had near perfect conditions for flowering and plenty of nice, fully set bunches of grapes. The long dry days rolled on and the lack of cloud cover ensured that the nights remained cool. This provided ideal conditions for flavour development and acid retention in the grapes leading up to harvest time.
In your glass you will have a pale straw, yellow colour. This wine is showing a delicately perfumed nose of white peaches, greengage plum and apple blossom notes with subtle hints of spice. On the lifted palate the stone fruit characters carry through and widen with those flavours of white peach, ripe apples, Nashi pear and soft spice notes. This wine is made in an off-dry style with soft natural acidity, making it a pleasure to drink with a variety of dishes and occasions. Chill and serve at 8-10°C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this season; and will also age and develop nicely for another 3-4 years.

Perfect wine pairing with fresh shellfish, bbq’d or grilled fish, sushi or sashimi, lightly seasoned white meats, and varied vegetarian dishes; enjoy.
