Grape Varietal: 100% Syrah
Growing Region: Crozes Hermitage, Rhône Valley, France

On several occasions over the past two decades, I have had the pleasure to be guided through the Jaboulet vineyards. Walking amongst the vines; looking closely at their age, and the specific soils composition under their well tended rows. Domaine de Thalabert is a unique vineyard, situated on a plateau in the shadow of the Hermitage; belonging to Maison Jaboulet Aîné since 1834 - and is the oldest in the appellation.

Domaine de Thalabert is a large estate with approximately 40 hectares made-up of small, rounded pebbles which were laid down as the melting glacial shelf slid across the region. They soak up the warmth of the sun and release it back into the canopy after sunset - aiding in achieving the optimal maturity for their old Syrah vines. The age of these vines varies across the estate and they range from 40 to 60 years.
As each parcel of fruit from the Thalabert estate come into the winery, they were carefully sorted then meticulously vinified using traditional methods. After fermentation the wine was then aged in oak barrels for 12 months in their ancient and impressive ‘VINEUM’ cellar.
In the glass you will have a dense purple-red colour. This wine has an intense bouquet, complex and aromatic with a blend of dark forest fruits, with a hint of toasted oak in the background which knits the aromas together beautifully, making for an inviting Crozes Hermitage red wine. From the first hint of this wine - one needs no further evidence of the extraordinary turn around in the quality of Jaboulet wines which Caroline Frey and her talented team have accomplished in just a few short years.
After such a pleasing introduction, the palate is certainly not disappointed - with a rich, full flavoured core balanced perfectly by wonderful natural grape acidity and intertwined with supple tannins from the ripe fruit and the time in oak. The ripe fruit on the layered palate, is accompanied by subtle dried herb and pepper notes which carry though nicely onto a long finish. A beautiful, rich wine: a modern-classic Crozes Hermitage with balance - a wine with early drinkability and ageing qualities. This wine has 13.5% alcohol. If opened in the next few years, decant for 30-45 minutes and serve at 16-18°C.

An exceptional Syrah treat from the northern Rhône Valley.

With decanting approachable and very enjoyable now; and will repay another 8-10 years.

Perfect wine pairing with slow cooked wild game, lamb with rosemary, roast pork with young earthy vegetables and also with aged hard cheeses, enjoy.
