An awareness of wines from Santenay in Burgundy and the reputation of Domaine Jessiaume is now not limited to an exclusive group of wine aficionados. Since the purchase of the estate by Sir David Murray in 2006 - with measured forward steps, they have been creating wines that everyone can enjoy in their youth and for those with patience, can mature with the best wines from the Burgundy region.

 

This 2012 ‘Bourgogne’ Pinot Noir is ever so approachable - showcasing both varietal integrity; along with traditional winemaking creating a wine true to its origins. This style of Pinot Noir is purposely made to be an uncomplicated, lighter style, while still showing elegance and finesse. Domaine Jessiaume over recent years has built an impressive reputation as a 'négociant'. Crafting small parcels of outstanding quality wines - sought after around the world. I have known the family for some years now, having had the opportunity to visit the estate on several occasions.
The fruit for this wine is sourced from 1.65ha of vines, located just a short distance from the winery, which is situated at the entrance to the village of Santenay. The vineyards are planted on a mix of clay and limestone. With the vines aspect facing south and south-east, giving the grapes a long moderate climate, resulting in lifted flavours, ideal for this style of wine.
After a combination of traditional and modern winemaking the fermented wine was then transferred into French oak barrels for 10 months, with 20% being new wood. After tasting the barrels, the blended wine was then placed in stainless steel tanks to develop for about 4 months prior to finishing and bottling.
The bouquet has delicate, bright notes of cherries, redcurrants and raspberry and subtle hint of herbs and smoke from the oak. The bright red fruit flavours, subtle earthy characters and managed time in oak has produced a wine with a medium weight palate, supple, well balanced tannins and nicely integrated oak. This is an approachable, harmonious Pinot Noir true to its terroir, along with combining modern influences appreciated by the new generation of international wine enthusiasts. Decant for 15-20 minutes and if possible serve at 15-17ºC.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this season; and will develop nicely for another 4-5 years.

Perfect wine pairing with slow roasted pork, grilled lamb cutlets, smoked salmon, mild mushroom pasta, seasoned Moussaka, plus ideal with pâté on thin toast, enjoy.
