I get asked a great deal on my travels and during tastings - is there a red wine that is full flavoured, approachable in its youth, able to pair with a range of meat dishes and can improve with age. They always end their enquiry with - yes we are asking a lot - but if you don’t ask you don’t know. My typical answer in simple terms; yes you are asking a great deal from a red wine - but the good news is yes, there are a few such wines.

 

And one such wine is affordable and gives you the best of both the ‘old world’ with a good dose of the ‘new’ in the same glass. This 2014 Brookfields ‘Sun-Dried’ Malbec along with previous vintages is that wine; and just one month ago this new vintage was released.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Tuki Tuki Valley and Ohiti Estate vineyards. Peter has two particular clones of Malbec used to produce this wine, which readily achieve complex fruit characters, normally harvested at 23 Brix. The fruit for this wine is carefully ‘sun-dried’ - hence its name. It is a vigilantly monitored process which enhances the concentration of the individual berries, as well as the wines colour, aroma and flavour profile.
The Malbec fruit was hand-picked, and then ‘sun-dried’ in trays in the winery pavilion located a few meters is front of the winery, before being crafted into this most mouth pleasing of wines. The fruit is fermented in open-top tanks, so Peter can hand plunge the cap back into the wine. Due to the loss of moisture inside each berry due to the ‘sun-drying’ process, the cap is hard and thick and demands more attention than normal when plunged. After pressing and malolactic fermentation has occurred, this Malbec went into a mix and new and old oak barrels for ageing and further development.
As you pour this wine into your glass, you will be greeted by a deep dark red colour with a magenta hue. The dark berry and spice aromas are simply intoxicating, so make sure you are sitting down when you take your first sip. The wine is rich and full, this 2014 ‘Sun-Dried’ Malbec has a concentrated mid-palate with a succulent silky texture. The vibrant Black Doris plums from the nose carry onto the palate, complimented with cinnamon and mocha, resting on a bed of supportive and well integrated oak, giving the wine a pleasingly long finish.
With only a few vintages of this style of wine under Peters’, belt - the ‘Sun-Dried’ Malbec is developing a reputation as a wine of power and personality in equal measure. At a respectable and well balanced 14.5% Alc, decant for 20-30 minutes and serve at 16-18°C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this season; though will appreciate and improve over the next 6-7 years. 

SUGGESTED FOOD MATCHES:
Perfect wine pairing with braised beef cheeks served with a red wine-jus and served with slow cooked earthy vegetables, plus also pairs well with chocolate torte, enjoy.
