Grape Varietals: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon & 3% Viognier
Growing Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Aurelio Montes

Since Aurelio’s first release under his label in 1988, Montes has been setting new standards and showcasing the dynamic quality of wine which can be made in Chile. This 2012 Montes ‘Alpha’ Syrah is made from selected grapes in their Marchigüe and Apalta vineyards in the Colchagua Valley - grown under their ‘Dry Farming’ philosophy. Leaving nature to do the job of irrigation, through natural rain: with only a small amount of irrigation when necessary.

Dry Farming increases the final quality of the wine with more ripe fruit character, and weight on the palate, while decreasing the use of water in their vineyards by up to 65%. The 2012 season was dry and clear, with veraison beginning in mid-January, essentially due to the predominance of those clear, warm days during a rain-free summer season. Temperature peaks in February and again in March made it necessary to start the harvest slightly early in their non-irrigated blocks destined for this ‘icon’ wine.
Harvest for the entire volume destined for this ‘Alpha’ wine began in the first week of April and ended on the 28th. Overall grape health was very good, although extreme care was taken to remove bunches showing any signs of dehydration. After careful fermentation of each parcel of fruit - 55% of the wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels with a mix of 1 to 3 years of age. Then after tasting and final blending the wine was gently filtered and bottled.
In the glass you will be greeted by a deep red colour with a violet hue. This vintage is highly aromatic with expressive wild black and blue berries on the nose with notes of homemade jam and dried herbs. The time in mixed aged French oak has added subtle layers of complexity, with touches of vanilla complimenting those rich berry flavours and natural spice and pepper notes, and touches of mocha coffee and with just a hint of nutmeg. The palate is rounded and well balanced with nicely integrated ripe fruit, natural tannins and appropriate oak. This wine has a generous mouth feel and pleasingly long finish. This vintage has 14.8% Alc. Decant for 30-45 minutes and serve at 17-18°C.

A generous and engaging Chilean Syrah.
