Grape Varietals: 99% Syrah, 1% Viognier
Growing Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Chief Winemaker: Simon Nunns

I have been continually impressed with the Syrah wines coming out of Hawke’s Bay over the past 15 years. The environmental conditions to make quality Syrah in Hawke’s Bay have always been there - and now with understanding and experience - the wines in the bottle are expressing something extremely special and unique to this part of the world. Much has been talked about regarding the 2013 New Zealand vintage, right across all regions.

So I was very curious to revisit this wine recently, as in its youth it was packed with potential and I wasn’t disappointed. Simon and the team at Coopers Creek only make reserve wines in the best of vintages and after the dust has settled and the barrels have been sampled and assembled did they decide to bottle a reserve label. This 2013 Reserve Syrah was made from fruit from their Chalk Ridge block vineyard, located just to the south of Havelock North in Hawke’s Bay.
The grapes grow on a steep, north facing amphitheatre with a soil profile mixed with fossil limestone. After selective hand harvesting they only used the ripest parcels from the top of the hill to craft this Reserve Syrah. A very small amount of Viognier - actually 1%, grown on the same block was co-fermented with the Syrah fruit to add fragrance and help define complexity and to lift and fix the colour. The 2013 vintage was an ideal growing season and the vineyard was in excellent condition come harvest time. After some careful and traditional vinification, the fermented juice was transferred into French oak barrels (with 60% being new) - where it spent around 12 months maturing before assemblage and bottling.
As you pour this wine into your glass, you are greeted by a beautiful deep red colour, with a dense, dark core and still a vibrant purple hue. The nose on this Hawke’s Bay Syrah is showcasing ripe dark fruits, with a touch of white pepper, dried herbs, and some lovely, savoury oak notes. The palate has been beautifully structured, producing a wine which is full and engaging with well integrated natural fine tannins, balanced oak and with good persistence. The dark fruit flavours on the mid palate are broad and lingering resulting in a generous and rewarding finish.
This vintage has 14%Alc - Decant for 30-45 minutes and serve at 16-18°C.

A quality Hawke’s Bay Syrah, putting world’s taste buds on notice.
