Château Routas is situated at the center of AOC Coteaux Varois en Provence, about an hour north of Bandol. Varois is gaining recognition as a serious wine region through the efforts of quality producers like Château Routas. The sustainable winegrowing estate has 260 hectares encompassing wheat fields, olive tree, and black truffles. Red poppies give way to brilliant yellow sunflowers, and in the fall, the surrounding forests yield abundant mushrooms.

Helpful insects play their part in keeping the vines disease-free. The surrounding forest is also a favourite refuge of the local wild boars, which are unfortunately a little too fond of the ripe grapes. At 400m above sea level, the elevation is among the appellation's highest, providing cool nights which slows the ripening of the grapes, contributing complexity and shaping harvests that can be up to a month later than those nearby.
This 2014 Rosé is sourced from a mix of vineyards with an average age of 15 years. When each parcel was deemed ready for harvest, the grapes were brought a short distance to the winery and gently destemmed, cooled and then pressed. The juice and the skins remained in contact for 24 hours. After this brief period of maceration, 8% of the Syrah juice went straight into oak barrels for primary and malolactic fermentation. The Cinsault, Grenache and remaining Syrah were fermented in stainless steel tanks, with no malolactic fermentation. The different wine parcels were aged separately for approximately 3 months, and then tasted and blended prior to bottling.
In you pour this rosé wine, a shimmering coral salmon colour will fill your glass. On the nose you will be greeted by freshly cut watermelon, along with ripe red berry aromas and floral notes. These all lead onto the bright and lively palate, filled with ripe wild strawberries and subtle seams of mineral notes. Respectful winemaking by Jean Louis has resulted in this 2014 Routas Rosé being clean and crisp, with vibrant natural acidity and a refreshing dry finish.
This 2014 Routas Rosé has 13% Alc. Chill gently and serve at 8-10°C.
