Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: ‘Golden Slopes’ - Gisborne, New Zealand
Owners: Kirsten & Richard Searle

I love the diversity in which we can find within Chardonnay from New Zealand. From light, bright expressions which can stand proud alongside the brightest wines from Chablis. To well-crafted fuller, oak style expressions that compliment and bring out the best in a range of richly flavoured dishes. This 2014 vibrant expression from Matawhero, is in my opinion possibly the best 'unoaked' style Chardonnay which I have sampled this year.

To produce a Chardonnay of this quality - standing virtually naked with only what nature has given - takes confidence. Trusting the vineyard team and then the winemaker completely understanding the flavour profiles of each parcel and making the best hands-off decisions for the fruit to express and not mask or dilute the true essence in the varietal.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Tietjen’s and Leaderbrand vineyards located on the ‘Golden Slope’ area in Gisborne. Growing in deep clay soils over a limestone base, ideal conditions for this style of Mendoza clone. The location and slope gives the fruit good exposure to sun and during the growing season the vines were leaf plucked and also delateralised.
After a good season in Gisborne, the grapes attained ideal ripeness and were machine harvested at night to retain all of those natural bright characters. On the short journey back to the winery no antioxidant was added allowing the natural phenolics to slightly oxidise. Once in the winery the grapes were gently crushed and pressed. Cold settled for 36 hours the juice was allowed to spontaneously ferment with indigenous yeast until dry. The wine was then made ready for malolactic fermentation and when deemed in balance, the wine was stabilized to secure the desired ‘malo’ characteristics on the palate, then filtered and bottled.
In your glass you will be greeted by a pale straw colour with a golden glow. On the nose you will find ripe melon and peach aromas with subtle nectarine notes. On the palate be prepared for vibrant ripe summer stone-fruits, with peach and white nectarine flavours and an engaging smooth palate, with balanced acidity and a refreshing bright finish.
This Chardonnay has 14.2% Alc. Chill gently and serve at 8-9°C.

A benchmark, quality unoaked Chardonnay.
