Grape Varietals: 49% Pinot Noir & 51% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Reims, France
Chef de Cave: Régis Camus

Winemaking responsibilities are in the exceptionally competent hands of Régis Camus. Considered the best 'Chef de Cave' ever crowned Sparkling Winemaker of the year by the International Wine Challenge - where he received his eighth award in 2013. Over the past two decades Régis has been building up their collection of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reserve wines, often sourced from Grand Cru sites.

What Piper-Heidsieck has been able to achieve in the past decade or so is simply sensational. At the same time increasing the proportion of these in the Brut NV cuvée to around 15% as he believes this is a key component to giving the wines palate generosity.
The 2006 growing season was characterised by variable weather, from a heatwave in July to strong rains and hail in August. These unique conditions had an influential impact on the typical varietals, with Pinot Noir showing exceptional intensity, while Chardonnay expressed characters ideal for longer maturation. This guided Régis to increase the proportion of Chardonnay in the final blend to an unusually high 51% to soften the power of the Pinot Noir. As Piper tends to favour a greater proportion of Pinot Noir in its vintage cuvées.
This is a cuvée of 17 Champagne crus vineyards, of which 9 are Grands Crus and 7 Premiers Crus. This wine was rested on its lees in their cellars for six years for this vintage Champagne to reach the perfect balance, finally expressing Piper’s inherent elegance and charm.
As you slowly pour into a wide-shaped flute, you are greeted by pale gold colour, to which the higher proportion of Chardonnay brings a subtle green glow. You are then enticed by the crisp and delicate effervescence. On the nose you have an invigorating aroma of dried apricots, entwined with small summer pip-fruits and a hint of dried ginger spice. On the palate this vintage Champagne is ample with harmonious generosity across your senses. This is a particularly dense and well-structured wine, whose big-hearted personality is enriched with candied mandarin peel, nashi pear and highlighted by a touch of dried tea-leafs and toasted almonds. This 2006 Vintage Champagne has an incredibly long finish and the freshness of the Chardonnay tames the Pinot Noirs vigour, giving the wine balance and is elegantly charming.
This 2006 Vintage Champagne has 12% Alc. Chill gently and serve at 8-10°C.

A well-structured, elegant and charming Champagne.
