The Rimu Grove home vineyard was established back in 1995 and has 7 hectares of vines planted on gentle north facing slopes on the ‘Bronte’ Peninsula overlooking the Waimea inlet to Nelson. The combination of the country’s highest sunshine hours, a temperate maritime microclimate and glacial gravels in the Moutere Clays, contribute to make this a unique home for their precious vines.

 

Patrick and his passionate team meticulously maintain their vines, along with harvesting by hand, usually in early April. Being a small sized winery, everyone rolls up their sleeves and digs in when and where required. Patrick can’t say enough about the loyal locals who come back year after year, along with a number of travelers passing through Nelson, providing them with an ever changing seasonal crew.
For Patrick when it comes to crafting wine, he performs a balancing act between a total hands-on and a non-interference ethos to winemaking. Which when executed correctly allows his wines to develop the unique individuality that Patrick constantly strives.
The 2015 ‘Bronte’ Pinot Gris is all Rimu Grove fruit, and if you speak with Patrick, he will say that these vines are now just hitting there straps - after being in the ground for some 16 years. Patrick was pleased with the growing season and the quality of the fruit at time of harvest. All of the teams hard work in the vineyard has resulted in ideal fruit, with the vines usual low-cropping at harvest time of less than 5 tonnes/ha.
Patrick then works with the different parcels as they come into the compact winery, making wine in several different tanks using various yeasts strains sourced from Alsace, along with approximately 5% barrel fermentation in neutral French barriques to provide complexity and textural mouth-feel. I commented to Patrick that a really like the style of this year’s version of ‘Bronte’ Pinot Gris - a drier expression than previous vintages - a stylistic choice made by Patrick.
As you pour this wine into your glass you will be greeted by a straw gold colour. On the nose citrus, pears and subtle hints of stone-fruits entice the senses. These characters carry onto the palate combining with honeysuckle, pear, quince, spice and mineral notes. The wine showcases the approachable nature of Pinot Gris with clean and bright varietal characteristics and this palpable mineral seam. This is an international style Pinot Gris, with an engaging medium palate, succulent mouth-feel and well-balanced acidity, resulting in a clean and refreshing finish. An engaging, textural quality leaving your taste buds wanting more.
This 2015 ‘Bronte’ Pinot Gris has 13% Alc. Chill gently and serve at 8-10°C.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
Drinking perfectly well this summer season; plus will age well for another 2-3 years.
