Grape Varietal: 100% Riesling
Growing Region: Waipara Valley, New Zealand
Chief Winemaker: Simon McGeorge

Waipara has developed a deserved respect from those in the know and wine enthusiasts alike around the globe for its Riesling expressions. Though still locally, only a select few are fully aware of this and enjoying them on a regular basis. This style of wine is so vibrant, approachable and affordable, and some many are missing out on something uniquely special, when paired with so many varied fresh dishes and cuisine.

The Waipara Valley and in particular Waipara Hills are one of the most outstanding and consistent exponents of Riesling in New Zealand. The vibrant fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from ‘The Mound’ vineyard in the Waipara Valley, where the 16 year old vines planted on layers of mixed clays and soils adding complexity to this intriguing wine.
As with the relaxed easy going nature of naming places across New Zealand ‘The Mound Vineyard’ is named due to a geographical feature, i.e. a gentle mound located in the vineyard. During the 2015 growing season, a spring frost slightly knocked the vines but the combination of a small crop and the following warm, dry temperatures resulted in fruit with great concentration of flavours. And at the time of harvest, Simon and the team were able to pick fruit of exceptional quality.
The majority of the Riesling fruit was brought directly into the winery for prompt pressing, whilst 10% was left to cold soak on skins for up to 12 hours to extract deeper flavours. The juice was then left to settle until it became clean, racked, then warmed and inoculated with selected yeasts to promote texture during vinification. Fermentation of each parcel was stopped when sweetness levels balanced with natural acidity. The parcels were held at a cold temperature for a month, racked, sulphur add and then racked again to mature without yeast influence, developing the fresh fruity flavours found on the palate.
In your glass you will have a pale straw yellow with a hint of green. This wine has an expressive aroma, showcasing crisp apples, citrus and mandarin notes with a subtle hint of spice. These aromas turn into flavours on the palate, with bright apple, lifted lime characters, mandarin and grapefruit skin and sweet ginger spice rounding things out nicely. This vintage has vibrant varietal flavours generous structure and complexity initially hidden by its approachable style, a wine not to be missed this summer. A vibrant and engaging style of Riesling which delivers on its promise with a lingering citrus finish.
This 2015 ‘Waipara Hills’ Riesling has 12.0% Alc and residual sugar of 14.7g/L. Chill gently and serve at 7-9°C.

An elegant Riesling showing qualities well above its price.
