Chakana literally means ‘bridge’ in the local ancestral indigenous language and refers to the link between the Andean culture and the modern world. The estate is owned by Juan & Carla Pelizzatti, this updated and modern winery is located south of the city of Mendoza in Argentina. Their wines are made from grapes grown on their 150ha estate at the foothill of the Andes. This wine was formerly known as their ‘Reserve’ Malbec.

These vibrant, fruit driven wines from Chakana get better with every vintage under winemaker Gabriel Bloise. This Chakana 'Estate' Malbec is a prime example of the new generation of wines from Mendoza, crafted of Malbec. The Italian touch from owner Juan and consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini aim for refinement and bright varietal flavours.
This is a blend of parcels from two high-altitude sites in the foothills of the Andes. The handpicked grapes came from organically certified vineyards, which had warm days and cool nights providing ripe grapes with rounded fruit flavours, resulting in a beautiful wine, distinctive from other Mendoza expressions. After 12 days fermentation and going through malolactic, 100% of the wine had 12 months in 50% French and 50% American used oak barrels adding depth and character, and then about 6 months bottle development before release.
This 2014 Estate Selection Malbec was cement-fermented and matured in used oak barrels and is all about fruit characters and finesse. The result is an impressive, powerful, but also very approachable Malbec.
As you pour this wine into your glass, it will be filled by a deep red colour, with a sharp hue. The nose is ripe and fruit-driven, with engaging aromas of dark cherries, plums, mocha-coffee plus a subtle mineral note and a touch of spice. Most pleasing is the deft and well-integrated use of oak, from the seasoned barrels used during maturation. Remarkably full and with an engaging mouth feel as well as silky tannins. The palate is juicy, vibrant and well balanced with a lingering attractive finish. This a well crafted and expressive varietal wine, with ideal complexity, but also a very accessible Malbec.
This 2014 ‘Estate’ Malbec has 14% Alc. Minimal decanting required and serve at 15-17°C.

A vibrant, elegant and approachable 'Mendoza' Malbec.
