Grape Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Growing Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Peter Robertson

The ‘Marshall Bank’ Chardonnay is consistently one of New Zealand’s best wines. From start to finish; from the first bud burst to the hour of harvest. From the first squeezed drop of juice to the constant appraisal of the juice as it is fermenting in oak barrels. Peter is looking for the qualities required not only to be graded high enough to be blended and bottled as the ‘Marshall Bank’ - but of a quality that will also mature and age into a wine of note.

I have had the pleasure of sampling this wine on a few occasions before bottling, so it is always an interesting time, when this wine is released, having had only a short time to come accustom to it new home in the bottle, and see if this vintage will continue on the legacy of the most respected of wines.
The 2015 growing season was a challenging vintage, but with methodical and meticulous vineyard work, resulted in producing premium quality fruit for this wine. The ‘Marshall Bank’ Chardonnay grapes were grown at the Ohiti Estate vineyards, an inland heat trap some 30 kms from the coast. The name Marshall Bank comes from Peter’s old family property down in West Otago where his grand-father Dr. Bill Robertson practiced for 45 years.
The Chardonnay grapes were harvested on 23rd March 2015. On arrival at the winery fermentation took place in a 50/50 mix of new French and near new oak barriques in a carefully temperature controlled environment. After fermentation to fully dry was complete, the wine was then lee stirred weekly re-suspending and integrating complex flavour characters until it was racked. Peter then decided that only 10% of this Chardonnay needed to go through malolactic fermentation, crafting a lifted core to this blend. The total time spent in oak barrel was for approximately eight months.
As you pour this wine into your glass you will be greeted by a golden straw colour. This wine is bestowed with an amazing bouquet, the 2015 ‘Marshall Bank’ Chardonnay exudes ripe peach, rock-melon, along with well integrated toasty oak notes which all carry through onto the full and engaging palate. The partial malolactic fermentation has broadened and also retained a lift on the mid palate, while expressing complexity and elegance resulting in a wine with a pleasingly long and lingering finish.
This 2015 ‘Marshall Bank’ Chardonnay has 14% Alc. Cool decant for 15-20 minutes and serve in a generous wine glass at 8-10°C.

A meticulously-crafted, generous and character filled Chardonnay.
