Grape Varietal: 100% Shiraz
Growing Region: McLaren Vale, Australia
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Dean Hewitson

For those unfamiliar with the ‘The Mad Hatter’ Shiraz crafted by Dean Hewitson. It all started with a tasting back in 1988 with the renowned, but now late Len Evans. As they looked at what was regarded as some of the best red wines made in Australia at the time. Dean was focusing on wine descriptors, while Len described broader concepts like terroir, structure, power and the background story that gave these wines context.

This experience changed how Dean thought about wine, and are at the heart of everything Dean and his winemaking team do today. The fruit for this wine as with previous, came from a single vineyard located between the Seaview Ridge and the lofty Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale, south Australia. The vines which are now over 50 years old, are relatively low cropping at just over 2 tonnes per acre - and consistently deliver what Dean feels are a true expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Dean takes great care selecting the right barrels to support and best express the fruit. They trailed a range of barrels from small Burgundian coopers, who were able to supply barriques using Nevers, Troncais, Allier and Bertranges oak. No detail is left unaddressed, with each barrel being sampled every six months to discover the ideal balance between forest oak and toasting levels, while still allowing the fruit to shine. With each vintage Dean makes small but significant adjustments, according to what the fruit requires. The 2013 'The Mad Hatter' Shiraz was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, intensifying the natural fruit flavours, characters and complexity of the wine.
As you pour this wine into your glass you will be greeted by a deep, dark and vibrant red/purple colour with a bright hue. On the nose you will be invited by an intense expression of wild, dark fruits, with earthy and subtle spice undertones.
The palate is engaging with defined dark fruits infused with dried herbs and precision tannins, amazing depth and vibrancy. The wine is well balanced with a seamless connection between the confident natural fruit tannins and good use of new French oak. The wine even with only a few years in the bottle is showing great structure and rich fruit character. The Shiraz is brilliantly crafted and a wonderful expression with a pleasingly long finish.
