Grape Varietal: 90% Carménère & 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
Growing Region: Colchagua Valley, Chile
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Aurelio Montes

This Montes 'Alpha' Carménère is made from selected grapes sourced from their Colchagua Valley and Marchigüe. Apalta vineyards grown under their ‘Dry Farming’ philosophy. Under this system they leave nature to do the job of irrigation through natural rain, and no irrigation unless nature doesn’t provide enough required for the vines. Dry Farming increases the quality of their wines with ripe fruit, more palate weight and decreasing water use up to 65%.

The vineyards soils tend to be deeper on the plains and thinner at the foot of the mountain and upper slope areas. In the case of this Carménère, the vineyards were planted on both the flatter and lower slopes areas, where the deeper soils have moderate moisture retention. Marchigüe is flatter and has lower hills with moderate slopes.
During the growing season the Carménère, had the leaves closest to the bunches removed in early January, leaving them completely exposed to achieve even ripening and good levels of acidity and phenolic potential. The parcels of fruit were harvested between the 8th to 24th of May. The growing season was one of many weather and ripening challenges, but in February the vines and bunches experienced high temperatures which brought the grapes and their level a ripeness and flavour profile very close to that of 2012, harvested on same date.
As each of the ripe fruit partials arrived into the winery, they were respectful and individually vinified with controlled fermentation. With approximately 55% of the wine being aged for 12 months in new French oak barrels. The wine was then tasted blend and made ready for bottling after only a light filtering.
As you pour this wine, you will be greeted by a deep rich red colour with a vibrant hue. On the engaging nose you will be gripped by the wines natural aromatic bouquet of ripe dark fruits, intense dried spices and cinnamon.
The palate if full and rewarding with ripe dark berry fruits, black plums, blueberries, dark cherries, preserved fruit, and a confident core of dried spices. The good use of French oak lends a balanced structure contribution with integrated toasted notes and along with mocha coffee in the background. The palate is smooth, rounded, engaging and persistent, with well-balanced tannins and good palate structure on a lingering finish.
This 2013 ‘Alpha’ Carménère has 14.5% Alc. Decant for 45-60 mins and serve at 16-18°C.
