Grape Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Growing Regions: Coonawarra & McLaren Vale, Australia
Owner / Winemaker: Geoff Merrill

In January of this year, I had the pleasure to visit and spend some quality time with Scott Heidrich (senior winemaker) at Geoff Merrill Wines. We visited several of the key vineyard sites and then we looked at a number of ageing barrel components, which will go into the upcoming vintages of their reserve style Cabernet Sauvignon. Only the best barrels of the vintage are selected for this reserve label and given additional time in oak prior to bottling.

Speaking with Scott he remembers well the testing 2008 season, talking about the incredible heat wave which affected the region and the associated challenges. You can see by how he describes the finished wine, indications both in the vineyard at time of harvest and the quality of fruit which arrived into the winery. Things hinted at 2008 being one of the best reserve Cabernet wines they have made to date. But this only occurred due to meticulous vineyard management enabling them to process healthy ripe fruit in excellent condition to craft this premium expression.
The fruit for this ‘reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from 70% in Coonawarra and 30% from McLaren Vale. After controlled and respectful vinification the wine then spent some 30 plus months in a mix of small oak barrels.
As you pour this wine, you will be greeted by a deep red colour with an ageing red hue. On the nose the wine is expressing intense and complex aromas of dark berries and dried herbs and earthy notes. This full-bodied, complex wine has begun to display some bottle development. The palate has an excellent structure and presence - showcasing blackcurrants and bitter chocolate notes supported by very well integrated oak plus those firm fruit tannins provide a refined character to a well-crafted wine which is slowly reveals itself. This Cabernet also has perfectly balanced acidity ensuring a long life and a broad range of food pairing combinations. This wine has layers of personality and a long and lingering rich finish.
This 2008 Geoff Merrill ‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon has 14.5% Alc. Decant well for 45-60 mins and served in a generous glass at 17-18°C.

A rich, complex Cabernet Sauvignon with elegance and length.
