Grape Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Growing Region: Martinborough, New Zealand
Chief Winemaker: Roger Parkinson

This single vineyard ‘Block’ Pinot Noir is something special, not just here in New Zealand but on the world stage. Roger had been looking forward to having Pinot Noir vines with sufficient age to merit such designation. The release of this 2014 ‘Lease Block’ Pinot Noir is only the second, and is not resting on the success of the previous vintage, but rightly takes its place and develops on the recognition this label is receiving by those in the know.

The story of this wine started back in 1999 when they planted 0.8 hectares of Pinot Noir and since then they leased the vineyard. The soil profile of the block is a classic Martinborough mix of shallow alluvial silts over river gravels, with carefully managed low cropping vines.
The fruit from this site show both ripe primary varietal characters plus a dynamic expression of solid structure, greater depth and subtle mineral characters. This wine underwent precise vinification, with 22% of the fruit parcel being whole bunches, along with balanced de-stemming and a total maceration time of around 3 weeks. Fermentation and malolactic fermentation took place in tight-grained French oak barriques, with 40% being new oak. The total length of maturation in barrel was 12 months, With the finished wine being non-fined and unfiltered at bottling.
This vintage showcases ripe dark cherries, spice and savoury flavours for which Martinborough and Nga Waka Pinot Noir is renowned. But Roger has been able to express extra depth, texture and complexity in a special single vineyard wine. This wine is an honest well-crafted reflection of a special site and of these mature vines.
In your glass you will be greeted by a deep purple colour with a cherry hue. On the nose dark cherries and dried herb notes entice you into the wine. The palate transfers those aromas into intense flavours of ripe, rich cherries, truffles, dried herbs and savoury flavours. This wine has an engaging palate with texture and rich characters under-pinned by silky smooth tannins and subtle, refined oak from appropriate barrel maturation. Currently these youthful tannins leave just the right amount of grip on the palate giving this well balanced wine a long finish.
This 2014 Nga Waka ‘Lease Block’ Martinborough Pinot Noir has 13.5% Alc. Decant for 45-60 mins and serve at 15-17°C.

A generous Martinborough Pinot Noir with defined character.
