Grape Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
Growing Region: Mendoza, Argentina
Consulting Winemaker: Alberto Antonini

Argentina have a growing and respected pedigree of quality wines crafted from Malbec and Syrah - but equally engaging and enjoyable are their Cabernet Sauvignon expressions. And the team at Chakana have been quietly over achieving with this varietal and this wine it just a joy to share with varied cuisine and good friends anytime of the year. To get Cabernet to hit all the right notes takes great effort and attention to detail from start to finish.

This is an inviting honest Cabernet - Chakana’s winemaking style promotes minimal intervention in the winery, along with using indigenous yeasts, along with minimizing the use of sulphur and other additives during vinification - to let the fruit show its true voice. The fruit for this wine was grown and sourced from vineyards planted at around 960 - 1300 metres above sea level on a mixture of sandy loam and gravel soils.
The winemaking team used large volume barrels and un-lined cement vats which they have adapted to local varietal expressions in order to preserve the natural character of their terroir. This wine has been developed under the guidance of Alberto Antonini, an Italian consulting winemaker with whom Chakana has been working closely since 2006. Alberto has been a key contributor to Argentina’s rediscovery of quality winemaking and is a strong supporter and promoter of the enhancement of the regions unique terroirs.
This Chakana ‘Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon was made in a combination of stainless steel tanks and un-lined cement vats. With 12 months maturation and development in new and used French oak barrels varying in size from 225 litre barrels and 5000 litre foudres. Both Alberto and onsite winemaker Gabriel understand winemaking is a tool to express nature and believe the best wines are those which hide the hand of the maker to reveal their sense of place.
In the glass you will have a rich red colour and crimson hue. On the nose you are first aware of the classic hints of small ripe cassis berries, cedar wood, vanilla and subtle mint chocolate notes. These characters carry through and open onto the medium to full-bodied palate. The wine is honest, varietal and technically sound - expressing wild berries accompanied beautifully by ripe tannins, well integrated oak giving good palate texture, along with physiologically ripe, concentrated flavours with a medium-long clean finish.
This 2014 Chakana ‘Estate’ Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon has 14% Alc. Decant for 30-45 minutes and serve at 16-18°C.
