Grape Varietals: 60% Merlot & 40% Cabernet Sauvignon
Growing Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand
Owner / Chief Winemaker: Peter Robertson

I have had the pleasure of knowing Peter and his family for nearly 3 decades. And over this time, Peter’s premium Bordeaux style red wines have been recognised as icon wines not only within Hawke’s Bay - New Zealand, but around the world. Well known and enjoyed by those in the know for all this time. Though over the past decade or so, wine enthusiasts the world over have been paying more attention and enjoying the quality and elegance in his wines.

The Merlot for this wine was grown on an elevated ‘Highland’ north facing site adjacent to their other ‘Burnfoot’ Merlot vineyard in the ‘Tuki Tuki’ Valley of Hawke’s Bay. And the Cabernet Sauvignon was grown at their renowned inland heat trap 'Ohiti Estate'. The Merlot parcel was harvested on the 7th April and the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested on the 14th April, with both fruit parcels achieving good ripeness and sugar levels.
With this nice gap in harvesting dates, both parcels as they came into the winery were fermented separately, with the cap pumped over in the traditional Bordeaux manner. The time on skins exceeded two weeks. Then malolactic fermentation was completed prior to going to oak barrels, which was a mix of new and used French and American oak barriques.
As you pour this wine into your generous glass, you will be greeted by an intensely dark red colour and crimson hue. On the nose you will be invited by ripe plums, and subtle notes of vanilla spice. These two grape varietals work naturally so well together, but this doesn’t just happen without each clearly knowing the role that they and the other needs to play to bring out the best performance in this duet.
The flavours in the 2015 ‘Platinum’ Merlot / Cabernet are well orchestrated, with the Merlot from the ‘Highland’ site leading confidently from the front. Ripe plums, blackcurrant, toast, vanilla, balanced oak and integrated dried spices make this a generous red wine. The palate is rich, full bodied and engaging, with a well-balanced structure and approachable tannins, giving this wine a lingering finish. This 2015 ‘Highland’ Merlot / Cabernet is only the sixth ‘Platinum’ label made since 1989, as it is only made in the best of conditions.
This 2015 Brookfields ‘Highland’ Merlot / Cabernet has 14% Alc. Decant for 45-60 minutes and serve in a generous glass at 16-18°C.

A generous Merlot dominant wine of quality and refinement.

CELLARING POTENTIAL:
With good decanting enjoyable now; though will repay another 6-8 years.

Perfect wine pairing with prime red meats, slow roasted beef served with a herb, red wine-jus, flavoursome pasta dishes, earthy vegetarian cuisine and aged, hard cheeses - enjoy.
