The team at Matawhero have been going from strength to strength over the past few years. Achieving success with consistent medals and accolades, along with gaining the respect and following of a large number of passionate wine enthusiasts across the country and even further afield. Chenin Blanc is one of the classic grape varieties of the world - though still slightly lost in translation here in New Zealand.

But with a confident and relevant approach, this expression is something to please the taste buds and pair with varied summer cuisine. The grapes for this wine were again sourced from Pete Briant’s vineyard in the Patutahi region just across the river from the winery. The Chenin Blanc vines are planted on Kaiti clay soil and are still showing a youthful fresher spectrum of flavour characters, which is ideal for seafood and the coming summer season.
Both the vines and controlled vineyard management resulted in low yields and ensured early ripening with vibrant flavours. The harvest took place in the cool of the morning. The fruit reached an ideal ripeness after another warm end to the summer in Gisborne. The fruit parcels were immediately crushed and pressed ensuring that the brightest, most delicate aromas and characters in this wine were retained during fermentation.
Careful temperature controlled fermentation continued to protect this wine from over development. Once perfect balance of sweetness and alcohol had been achieved the wine was separated from the fermentation solids to maximise the expression of this varietals wonderful floral and citrus characters. The wine was then traditionally fined, filtered, bottled and rested a short time before release.
As you pour this wine, you will be greeted by a straw colour with a golden sheen. The nose is expressive and inviting, showcasing citrus fruits, floral and orange zest notes. On the palate your senses are engaged with white fleshed stone-fruits and honeysuckle flavours, perfectly balanced and lifted by fresh lime, a hint of residual sugar and natural fruit acidity. Giving the wine both mouthfeel and elegance, finishing clean, crisp and silky smooth.
This 2015 Matawhero ‘Church House’ Chenin Blanc has 12.7% Alc. Chill gently and serve in an aromatic glass at 8-10°C.

A varietal Chenin Blanc wine with youthful, vibrant enthusiasm.
